Whales and Dolphin Watching Tours
Go Whaling with the Pioneers & the Best!
Eco Team initiated commercial Whale & Dolphin watching in Sri Lanka way back in 2000 in association with the international Dolphin watch.
Over the last nine years, we have successfully conducted many whaling and dolphin watching tours off Dondra and Kalpitiya.
Sri Lanka is situated within the International Whaling Commission's protected zone in the Indian Ocean. Of the 80 species of cetaceans observed and identified worldwide, 26 are found in the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal, which we can access freely.
Whales seen include
Common Blue Whales , Bryde's Whales , Sperm Whales , Killer Whales , False Killer , Dwarf , Melon Headed Whales , Cuvier's Beaked Whales and if lucky, the elusive Indian Blue Whales.
Dolphins seen include
Spotted Dolphins, Spinner Dolphins, Fraser's Dolphins, Risso's Dolphins, Common Dolphins and the Bottlenose Dolphins
Dondra Point / Mirissa
With research findings confirmed by many experts in the field that the deep southern waters off Sri Lanka [ off Dondra point] is the best in the world for seeing blue and sperm whales, you are assured that your bet placed on the blue ocean in Sri Lanka has the highest probability of winning.
We care ….
In providing this fascinating experience, Eco Team works with a charitable trust set up in the area to generate employment opportunities for youth from tsunami affected areas.
When to go there – The best of the best months are December - January and April whilst February and March are also too good to miss. Need to avoid choppy / rough days. Mornings hours are the best !
Despite its natural beauty, the western peninsular area of KALPITIYA in the Puttalam district of Sri Lanka is remarkably untouched by tourism. But for those lucky enough to visit, there's a plethora of things to see and do! Close knit fishing community, fresh sea food, the Dutch Fort and St.Peter's KirkChurch provide interesting and varied possibilities for the visitor.
Though whale sightings are not that frequent off Kalpitiya compared to Dondra, it’s still one of the best places to see the ever smiling and singing chirpy Dolphins. If you are at the right place at the right time - which you can entrust to us - the spinner dolphins in Kalpitiya will give a show in their hundreds, perhaps even in their thousands.
We care ….
Here we work with the local fisher-folk, providing them an additional much-needed income and encouraging them to conserve these species.
When to go there – November to April is the best time of the year. Need to avoid choppy / rough days. Morning’s hours are the best!
